FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DRIVERS ARE NOT AWARE OF MOTORCYCLISTS
Drivers of other vehicles do not see
motorcycles until they hear the crashing sound. Then it’s too late.
Drivers of other vehicles need to be
educated on motorcycle awareness. Today, more motorcyclists are being injured
or killed by drivers of other vehicles because the drivers do even think about
watching out for motorcycles/
Dying to Ride was founded to promote
motorcycle awareness. DTR will be
presenting motorcycle awareness to students at high school learner driver
classes and to different groups of experienced adult drivers. DYING TO Ride is more than a motorcycle
awareness organization.
Dying to Ride is also providing comfort to widows of motorcycle collisions. Teresa has experienced the pain and grief of becoming a widow through a motorcycle collision. She is providing practical and emotional support through her experience to help other widows cope with their loss. As Teresa helps other widows, she will be asking them to join her in a group to help future widows.

Dying to Ride has future plans to
introduce legislation to mandate that drivers of other vehicles who are
involved in collisions with motorcycles are required to attend a motorcycle
awareness course. Dying to Ride strongly believes the introduction of this
legislation will in itself make awareness more important to drivers.

Looks like an honorable cause. Be sure and read Teresa's testimony. We could use a branch in the States.

Torch,
ReplyDeleteA good cause. I can't say if it will have any effect. (Though as a rider, I want nothing more than to be seen. The idea of a fatal accident is, well, something that preoccupies my mind from time to time.)
It's scary. I don't know any statistics, but I assume that a good number of drivers who 'don't notice' motorcyclists are too damned busy with something else while they should be attending to the task at hand - driving a massive steel missile. Unfortunately, most people just don't see things this way.

I applaud that lady Teresa Mills for her efforts in promoting bike awareness on the roads. Like it or not motorcycling (a pursuit I love) has an image problem when trying to influence policy. It is being slowly changed with the emergence of more mature enthusiasts but the actions of a small percentage always seems to undo the efforts of true enthusiasts.
ReplyDeleteBeing from Ireland I know there is a very well funded and proactive Bike awareness campaign on British and Irish television targeting other road users, but like Brady commented there is no statistics that I am aware of anecdotal or otherwise on how effective the campaign is. For is illegal to use mobile phones while driving in the UK or Ireland but it is still universally ignored with little or no consequence. The policy makers need to enforce existing rules before creating new ones. What is the situation in the US?
Most drivers are really not aware of some motorcycles that are on the road. This causes most of the accidents to motorcycles. I think that one good solution would be for them to have their own lanes.
ReplyDeleteHere in the States we seem to be "preaching to the choir" with many of our Motorcycle Awareness Campaigns...Great Information/Education however it stays among the riders themselves. I'm a cautious driver,I look twice before turning, never had an accident or so much as a speeding ticket but I often wonder if I could miss a motorcyclist while changing lanes, turning left or at a stop. I'm a fan of loud pipes, and lane splitting and think other motorist/political figures would be too if they understood the benefits. Currently CA is the only state in the U.S.A that allows lane splitting they are also the state that has significantly less rear end motorcycle involved crashes. When comparing California to Arizona (both have near year round riding weather)CA has nearly 1.2 million registered bikes while Arizona has under 200,000. Arizona however has almost 4 times the rear end accident rate. When comparing apples to apples the only difference seems to be lane sharing (otherwise known as lane filtering in Europe) Motorcycles make up 3% of the vehicles on the road in the US however in 2010 they made up 13% of the fatalities. Awareness is great but I'd like to see more done from the prevention side...RIDE SAFE
